If I Put A Roof On…, 2012

BOLD TENDENCIES, PECKAM LONDON as part of Peckham Artist Moving Image festival – PAMI
September 2021
The installation is a continuous loop form 11am to 10pm during opening hours.

‘if you put a roof on…’ is a 16mm film composed of seven sequences shot in Le Corbusier’s first house designed for his parents in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. Instead of being shown in Bold Tendencies auditorium as a traditional screening, Pauline has decided to create a film installation which occupies several parking bays on the 8th floor of the Car Park. Five sequences are displayed through monitors on precast concrete shapes that function as playful pedistals and two are projected on the bays’ side walls.

Each projection portrays the famous french dancehall queen Amzone, who repeats sexual and skillful movements in selected areas of Le Corbusier house, drawing interesting connections between Le Corbusier architecture and his relation to gender and more specifically femininity. The soundtrack is composed of several ‘footwork’ tracks, slowed, filtered and looped. The original tempo of footwork is unusually fast, so the idea was to dislocate the music from its tradition by slowing it, reflecting the way the repetition and reduction of movements in the choreography breaks the motions from their dancehall origins.
